Personal Care Homes

General Considerations

The following list is designed to help you focus on your needs and direct your decision. You should know that each Personal Care Home is unique and offers a variety of services. To find out more about these services, contact the residences directly.

The following list is not in any particular order, but you may want to rank them in order of your most important considerations.

Consideration 1 - Location

What is your preferred location? Is it in a neighborhood that is familiar? Will friends and family be able to visit easily and conveniently? Is it important to be on a bus route? Is the setting suitable? (urban, suburban, rural?)

Consideration 2 - Safety and Security

In some cases, safety and security are part of the care assessment. Are both the building and area secure?

Consideration 3 - Philosophy of Care

Is the mission statement of the organization consistent with your needs and expectations? What level of family involvement is expected, accepted or required?

Consideration 4 - Culture and Language

Is it important that your religion or spirituality be reflected in your selection? Can your first language be accommodated? Are there food, music and other cultural aspects that should be considered?

Consideration 5 - Unique Personal Preferences

Are pets a consideration? Is physical activity a priority? Is internet access a requirement? There are a wide range of possible questions relating to lifestyle that should be considered for each individual such as recreational activities, dietary requirements, and social interaction with peers.
